I was born and brought up in the Sandfields area of Swansea. My interest in art was recognised while I was still a pupil in St Helen’s Primary School and I was encouraged to develop my skills from that early age. For that I will be eternally grateful.
After completing a Foundation Course at Swansea College of Art and a Degree course at Cardiff I decided to become a teacher. Subsequently, most of my working life has been spent in art education - 20 years in comprehensive schools teaching Art and managing Creative Arts Departments (Art, Music and Drama) and 15 years working as Education Officer at Swansea’s Glynn Vivian Art Gallery.
For a brief spell of 4 years I had my own pottery in Gowerton where I specialised in making ceramic figures while my wife, Anne, managed our traditional toyshop and toy museum. It was great fun! From 1993 I also ran a company called John Upton Greeting Cards, designing cards for the Welsh market before selling the business in 2005. To view the cards follow this link to Huw Thomas Gallery.
I have always tried to inject a little humour into my artwork and, since my retirement in March 2009, I have enjoyed the luxury of just painting what I want, when I want and how I want.
I do hope, when you are browsing through my website, that my artwork gives you as much pleasure as it gave me when I was creating it. If you may be interested in owning a piece of my work, please contact me directly to arrange a viewing.
Thank you for visiting my website.
